New Delhi: Asian Games gold medalist in boxing N Dingko Singh died in Imphal on Thursday after losing a battle with liver cancer. He was 42 years old.
The boxer from Manipur won a gold medal in bantamweight at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.
Last year, he had tested positive for coronavirus.
Although he recovered from COVID-19, he had to undergo radiation therapy for liver treatment in January 2020. He even had to sell his house for his treatment.
Conferred with Arjuna Award in 1998, he was fighting liver cancer since 2018. He was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2013.
2008 Beijing Olympic Games bronze medalist boxer Vijender Singh tweeted, “My deepest condolences on this loss. May his life’s journey and struggle always remain a source [of] Inspiration for generations to come. I pray that the bereaved family find strength to overcome this sad and mourning period [emoticon: folded hands] #DinkoSingh.”
