Chandigarh: Former Indian women’s volleyball team captain, Nirmal Kaur, wife of legendary Olympian Milkha Singh, passed away at a hospital in Mohali on Sunday due to complications related to the Covid-19 infection, doctors said.
She was 85 years old and is survived by husband, a son and three daughters.
A statement from the Milkha Singh family said, “We are deeply saddened to inform you that Mrs Nirmal Milkha Singh passed away today at 4 pm after a heroic battle against COVID.”

A spokesperson of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) said on Saturday, “Milkha Singh’s health is fine and improving, but he is still in the ICU.”
Milkha Singh has been under the supervision of a medical team of senior doctors of the institute since his hospitalization on June 3.
“Our hearts mourn the sad demise of Mrs Nirmal Milkha Singh after battling COVID-19,” Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER, said in a statement.
“Widely known for his many achievements in the sports field and his extensive philanthropic work, he will be remembered for his achievements on and off the field,” he said.
